My Freedom, Their Fight: Honoring the struggle of Afghan Women
Client: Portland street art alliance
Opportunity
Commissioned by the Portland Street Art Alliance, this mural was created as a tribute to the women of Afghanistan—specifically those who have been barred from pursuing education and careers under oppressive regimes. At a time when global conversations around educational rights are as urgent as ever, this mural presented an opportunity to use public space as a platform for solidarity and awareness.
Approach
Deeply personal and politically charged, the design drew from my own background and the contrasting privileges I hold. As someone who is able to pursue both education and a career— opportunities denied to many of my relatives— I approached this piece with a sense of responsibility. Strategically located in a high-foot-traffic area of SE Ankeny, the work was designed to provoke reflection..
Result
For me personally, this piece served as a grounding reminder of my own privilege and purpose. For the community, it offered a moment of connection—to people, places, and struggles that often go unseen.
