Bridging Tradition + Play: Exploring Neue Haas Grotesk’s Legacy Through Unexpected Materials and Design

Done for: Portland State University
Opportunity
When tasked with creating a type specimen book, I decided to highlight the technical excellence of Neue Haas Grotesk while showcasing its versatility and appeal beyond conventional uses. The goal was to make a traditionally classic typeface feel approachable and exciting while exploring its untraditional story.
Approach
I designed a specimen book that intentionally juxtaposed the classic with the unconventional. The cover and interior used speckled cardstock—an unexpected choice to contrast with the timeless Neue Haas Grotesk letterforms scanned from flora elements, blending natural imagery with precise typography. Binding the book with 1.5” binder rings added a tactile, modular quality, reinforcing the playful yet technical nature of the piece. This approach explored both the typeface’s quirky origins and its adaptability, combining traditional craftsmanship with innovative presentation.
Result
The specimen book successfully conveyed Neue Haas Grotesk’s enduring legacy alongside its potential for creative reinterpretation. This piece stands out as a thoughtful exploration of how classic design can be revitalized through thoughtful material and conceptual contrasts.
